Multi-Way Wiring Troubleshooting

Below are some tips to help you troubleshoot the wiring for a multi-way with two switches. If you are having trouble with a multi-way with three or more switches, book a NOON-trained installer here or contact us here.

NOTE: Multi-way switches will not be fully functional until you've paired the switches using the NOON App.

Issue: Lights are stuck on

  1. Turn power off at the circuit breaker
    • WARNING! Shock hazard. May result in serious injury or death. Turn off power at the circuit breaker before checking the wiring.
  2. Remove either one of the NOON switches in the multi-way circuit (it doesn't matter which one) along with the Wall Plate, and base.
  3. Move the line wire
    • If the line wire is bundled with a traveler wire and a line/load wire on the base, move to the other traveler wire and line/load wire on the base.
    • Make sure all wires are secure by holding the wire connector and tugging each wire to make sure it doesn't come loose.
      • Tip: If the wire comes loose, straighten the wires using wire strippers or pliers before inserting them into the wire connector.
  4. Reinstall the base, put, on the wall plate, and click the switch into place.
  5. Turn on the power at the circuit breaker.
  6. Check each switch one at a time.
    1. Using the first switch, click to turn the lights on and then click again to turn them off. Leaving the lights off, use the second switch to click to turn the lights on and then click again to turn them off.

Issue: Only one switch in the multi-way can turn the lights on and off

  1. Turn power off at the circuit breaker
    • WARNING! Shock hazard. May result in serious injury or death. Turn off power at circuit breaker before checking the wiring.
  2. Remove the NOON switch that works along with the Wall Plate, and base. (It sounds backward, but it will fix the issue.)
  3. Separate the traveler wires
    1. The traveler wires have most likely been bundled together with a line/load wire on the base.
    2. Move one of the traveler wires so that it is bundled with the line wire and the other line/load wire on the base.
    3. Make sure all wires are secure by holding the wire connector and tugging each wire to make sure it doesn't come loose.
      • Tip: If the wire comes loose, straighten the wires using wire strippers or pliers before inserting them into the wire connector.
  4. Reinstall the base, attach the wall plate, and click the switch into place.
  5. Turn on the power at the circuit breaker.
  6. Check each switch one at a time.
    1. Using the first switch, click to turn the lights on and then click again to turn them off. Leaving the lights off, use the second switch to click to turn the lights on and then click again to turn them off.

Issue: Neutral wires are only available in one of the multi-way switch boxes

If you've already opened up the switch boxes in your multi-way circuit, and can only find neutral wires in one of them, you can still proceed with installing your NOON switches by re-purposing one of the traveler wires running between the boxes. Just follow the diagram below:
