Grounding to Metal Switch Boxes
A ground wire, which is usually a bare copper or green wire, safely carries additional electrical current away from the switch box to prevent dangerous electrical buildup or shock. Some homes built before the 1980’s may not have ground wires available in their switch boxes. Instead, the switch boxes themselves are made out of conductive metal and have been grounded. NOON switches are compatible in these configurations as long as the box is grounded.
To ground a NOON switch in this configuration, simply:
- Connect the GREEN wire from the NOON base to the grounding screw in the switch box, if available.
- OR Slip the GREEN wire from the NOON base between the mounting plate and screw that is attached to the grounded switch box before tightening.
